HANOI, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam reported 83,376 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, down 8,540 cases from Sunday, according to its Ministry of Health.

The new infections, logged in 62 localities nationwide, included 83,373 domestically transmitted and three imported.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the epidemic hotspot with 9,326 new cases on Monday, followed by the northern Bac Giang province with 4,186 and the central Nghe An province with 3,883.

On the same day, health authorities also documented about 180,000 COVID-19 cases detected earlier in Hanoi.

The infections brought the country's total tally to 9,274,849, with 42,358 deaths. Nationwide, 5,474,708 COVID-19 patients, or 59 percent of the infections, have recovered.

More than 205.2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including 188.1 million shots on people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.

Vietnam has gone through four coronavirus waves of increasing scale, complication, and infectivity. As of Monday, it has registered nearly 9.27 million locally transmitted COVID-19 cases since the start of the current wave in April 2021, said the health ministry.
