BEIJING Sept. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The opera Macbeth produced by China’s National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) has witnessed packed houses in Beijing as it is dedicated to Shakespeare’s 400th death anniversary.
When the Beijing people are still trying hard to get a ticket to it, another theater festival with the same theme on Shakespeare is about to raise its curtain in Shanghai --the Shanghai International Experimental Theater Festival.
Its opening performance will be a drama Macbeth by students from Shanghai Theater Academy(STA).
Following the opening, more “Macbeths” coming from Italy, Portugal, Holland, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Iran, India, Congo, Argentina, and the home of this great writer, Britain, will take their turn to meet with the Shanghai audiences from Sept. 11 to 18.
This Shanghai festival has come to its 9th year. Co-held by STA, International Theater Institute, and Chinese Dramatists Association, this year’s festival will interpret Shakespeare’s works from various perspectives and in different languages.
For instance, the opening performance is the perspective of modern youths. The art troupe from Congo will bring in an African perspective to allow the audience to have their judgment on African social issues.
Besides traditional drama, there is the darkly humorous Macbain from Holland, in which two couples on the stage dressed modernly retell the moving story in modern language.
While the artists of British production Macbeth: Without Words thus believe that the story can also be told without words, dancers from India will try to express the inner feelings of the roles by body in Macbeth Badya. Though they dance to Indian music, they communicate themselves with the audience internationally. Such a form of physical theater can usually create extraordinary experience for the watchers.
The story of this Scottish King is not new to the audiences. The humanity reflected in it has become the soul of the Western Renaissance and the Asian humanistic enlightenment. The artistic charm has made it not only belong to that time of greatest progressive revolution but to all centuries.
