ISTANBUL, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Turkish security forces on Thursday arrested a suspected member of the Islamic State over spying on a military command post in Istanbul, local media reported.

Police units acted upon a tipoff that a man who climbed a tree was secretly monitoring the Yenibosna Military Police Battalion Command on the European side of the city, the state-run Anadolu agency reported.

Istanbul is Turkey's largest city and built on two continents, divided by the Bosphorus Strait.

According to the agency, the incident happened at around 2 a.m. local time (2300 GMT) on Feb. 20 during the nationwide weekend COVID-19 lockdown.

Police reportedly found several digital materials, images and documents about the suspect that are related to the Islamic State.

Following a police investigation, the suspect named as "Muhammed Yahya E." was identified as a member of the group and arrested upon court order on Thursday, the agency added.

The Islamic State has been blamed for a spate of deadly attacks in Turkey since 2015. Enditem
