VALLETTA, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Investors in large-scale renewable energy projects in Malta can now tap into a new 26-million-euro (30.8 million U.S. dollars) scheme aimed at helping the country inch closer to its target, Energy Minister Miriam Dalli said here on Tuesday.
Launching the new scheme, Dalli explained at a press conference that investors in renewable energy projects, including onshore wind, photovoltaic (PV) and solar of over one megawatt (MW) capacity will be offered a fixed price for the power they feed into the local energy grid over the next 20 years.
Dalli said the investment would allow for the installation of over-1MW with a total capacity of 16MW of energy.
The scheme targets owners of quarries, disused landfills, industrial land, roofs and car parks, among others, who want to install PV panels.
The scheme is part of Malta's efforts to boost sustainable and cleaner energy production in the country and reach its emissions targets.
Through a series of schemes, the government is working to generate energy in a more sustainable way. She said the country aims to have 11.5 percent of its power coming from renewable sources.
Dalli noted that the government had launched another scheme two months ago for smaller projects, which generate between 40KW to 1MW of renewable energy.
The minister said that with this new scheme, Malta will be ticking off four targets set by the United Nations: affordable and clean energy; improving infrastructure and innovation in this industry; responsible production and consumption; and addressing climate change. Enditem
