TIRANA, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Albania's Constitutional Court abrogated on Wednesday evening the impeachment of President Ilir Meta, who has been accused by the ruling Socialist Party of violating the country's constitution.

The Constitutional Court said that it has decided that Meta did not violate the country's constitution and his impeachment by the parliament is not based on law.

The court decision has allowed Meta to stay in his position until his mandate ends in July.

At an extraordinary parliament plenary session held on June 9 last year, lawmakers voted with 104 in favor, seven against to impeach the president.

Meta has been accused by Socialist lawmakers of inciting hatred and violence in the country, putting people's lives at risk, interfering with and intimidating public institutions, damaging the country's image, reputation and relations with its strategic partners, as well as openly supporting opposition parties ahead of the April 25 general elections.

The president of Albania represents the unity of the Albanian people and is also the supreme commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces.

Born in March 1969, Meta took office as the Albanian president in July 2017.
