Between 1405 and 1433, the Ming government sponsored seven naval expeditions.Zheng He's first voyage departed July 11, 1405, from Suzhou and consisted of a fleet of 317 ships holding almost 28,000 crewmen.
His expeditions reached numerous countries and lasted for years. During his 28 years at sea, he led the vast fleet and took the Chinese civilization to Asia and Africa.
Zheng He's fleet was following long-established, well-mapped routes of trade between China and the Arabian peninsula employed since at least the Han Dynasty.
Zheng He led seven expeditions to the "Western" or Indian Ocean. Zheng He brought back to China many trophies and envoys from more than thirty kingdoms.
National Geographic suggests Zheng He was the inspiration for "Sinbad," a character in the travel-romance "Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor" in the Arab classic "The Book of One Thousand and One Nights.
