LOS ANGELES, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Warner Bros. and Legendary's monster film "Godzilla vs. Kong" smashed pandemic era box office record in North America with 32.2 million U.S. dollars from 3,064 theaters between Friday and Sunday in its North American opening weekend, according to studio figures collected by measurement firm Comscore.

The monster mash-up, released on Wednesday in North American theatres, has grossed 48.5 million dollars to date at the North American box office.

"Godzilla vs. Kong" is the fourth entry in Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise. In the film, the two iconic silver screen behemoths meet in a spectacular battle for the ages, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance.

Directed by Adam Wingard, the film stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Shun Oguri, Eiza Gonzalez and Julian Dennison.

Comscore data showed that the film added another 120.1 million dollars globally from 39 markets this weekend for a worldwide total of 285.4 million dollars to date. It performed particularly well in China. According to the box office data compiled by Maoyan, a Chinese movie-ticketing and film data platform, "Godzilla vs. Kong" earned more than 887 million yuan (around 135 million U.S. dollars) after ten days of launch in the Chinese mainland.
