Namtso Lake, known as the "heavenly lake" among the Tibetan locals, is the highest altitude saltwater lake in the world. The lake lies at an elevation of 4,718 m (15,479 ft). It's becoming popular for people from all over China to walk around the lake to appreciate its touching beauty. A hiking event is held annually during the Shoton Festival in early September.

The whole hiking mileage is 10.2 kilometers. Special activities are set for participants to experience the Tibetan folk customs along the way.

2.5 kilometers and 6 kilometers away from the starting point, rest stops provide special handmade tsampa, fueling energy for hikers.

Tsampa is a Tibetan foodstuff. It is made by flour, mixed with the salty Tibetan butter tea. Local herdsmen also teach hikers to make butter tea by themselves.

At the rest stops, native Tibetan perform Wordo casting and weaving yak wool for hikers.

Hikers who finish the travel can get special awards--white Hada, which means respect in Tibetan ritual.
