RABAT, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Moroccan security services foiled on Friday a smuggling operation of 4.3 tonnes of cannabis, the official news agency MAP reported.

The drugs were packed in 94 bags to be transported by vessels in the coastal area of Saidia in the Mediterranean, the report said.

Under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office, the judicial police in Saidia has launched an investigation to identify the people involved and the international ramifications of this drug ring, it added.

Despite efforts to crack down on cannabis during the past decade, Morocco remains one of the world's largest producers of the narcotic plant, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime. Enditem
