ISTANBUL, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Ship traffic in Istanbul's Bosphorus Strait, one of the busiest waterways in the world, was halted in both directions on Monday due to a rudder failure of a vessel.

A 64-meter-long cargo ship named Brabus experienced a rudder failure at the northern entrance of the strait, the Directorate General of Coastal Safety said.

The directorate said on the social media platform X that rescue and evacuation boats had been dispatched to the scene to assist the stranded ship.

In an updated post on X, the directorate announced the vessel had been safely towed away by rescue boats and has anchored in a secure zone.

Brabus was sailing from Türkiye's northern province of Trabzon to the Bandirma district of Balikesir province in the Marmara region, according to the directorate.
