In the thick of Daleks! Peter Capaldi is the new Doctor Who
PETER Capaldi has been announced as the new Doctor Who.
The Thick Of It star is stepping into the Time Lord’s well-travelled Tardis following Matt Smith’s departure from the legendary sci-fi show.
The announcement was made in a special live broadcast on BBC1 this evening.
Peter, 55, will be the 12th actor to play the iconic character.
Bosses have opted for an older Doctor this time round – Matt was only 26 when he took on the job, and his predecessor David Tennant was 35.
The identity of the character’s 12th incarnation has been a closely guarded secret, with writer Stephen Moffat and a handful of others codenaming the mystery replacement “Houdini”.
Matt was among those informed of Peter’s appointment – and has advised him on how to handle the fame.
An insider said: “They’ve spoken and Matt offered some early words of wisdom and advice about being the Doctor.”
BBC chiefs smuggled Peter into studios unseen before his unveiling.
However, Matt still has one more outing on the big screen as the Time Lord in a 50th anniversary special that’s airing in 3D this November.
Peter is best known for playing a spin doctor in BBC comedy series The Thick Of It and movie spin-off In The Loop.
Other hotly-tipped candidates for the Who role included Andrew Scott, Ben Daniels, Ben Whishaw and David Harewood.
