BEIJING, June 9 (Xinhua) -- China's railway operators laid on extra trains to manage a record number of passengers on Thursday, the first day of the three-day holiday for Dragon Boat Festival.
Altogether, 411 temporary trains were added on Thursday, as the number of trips made by railway passengers nationwide was estimated at 10.7 million, said the China Railway Corporation.
China's annual two-day college entrance exams, or "gaokao," ended on Wednesday, freeing up a large number of high school graduates for travel.
On Wednesday, 9.724 million trips were made across China, up 6.5 percent year on year, as people visited tourist attractions or went to their hometowns.
Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, June 9 this year.
