Harbin-Europe freight trains complete 210 million dollar year

HARBIN, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Cargo trains between Europe and Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, carried 210 million U.S. dollars worth of goods in their first year.

Ninety-nine trains have carried more than 2,500 containers since the first train set off from Harbin on June 13 last year, reaching the German city of Hamburg via Russia and Poland, said the Harbin government on Monday.

Average value of a container from Harbin to Hamburg was 110,000 U.S. dollars, with electronic devices and machinery, while that from Germany back, with automobile parts inside, is worth of 330,000 U.S. dollars each, said Meng Qingwen, general manager of a logistics company that provides freight services between Harbin and Europe.

Taking 15 days, the 9,820-km journey is faster than sea transportation and cheaper than air freight. The outward trains carry goods from China, the Republic of Korea and Japan, while incoming trains bring goods from Germany, Poland, France, Spain and Italy.

Other Chinese cities including Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hefei, Suzhou and Yiwu have similar freight services.
