KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Taliban key commander Mullah Khairullah and four of his bodyguards have been killed in Qala-e-Zal district of the northern Kunduz province, provincial police chief Mohammad Qasim Jangalbagh said Thursday.

"Taliban notorious commander Mullah Khairullah along with four of his bodyguards was killed after unmanned plane struck their hideout in Qala-e-Zal district late last night," Jangalbagh told Xinhua.

Khairullah was commander of more than 300 armed insurgents over the past couple of years and his death could prove a major blow to the Taliban fighters in Kunduz and the neighbroing Takhar and Baghlan provinces, the police chief added.

Taliban militants who are active in parts of the volatile Kunduz province have yet to make comment.

The strategically important Qala-e-Zal district along the border with Tajikistan is the battleground between Taliban and government forces over the past several months.
