Armed group attacks market in Sudan's North Darfur State

KHARTOUM, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- An armed group on Thursday attacked a market in El Fashir, the capital city of Sudan's North Darfur State, according to a statement by the state government.

"Fire exchange is still continuing between the government forces and the armed group," said North Darfur State government in a statement.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses reportedly said an armed group aboard seven vehicles attacked the grand market in El Fasher and looted some of the market shops.

The government statement did not give any statistics on human or material loss due to the attack.

Three Darfur armed groups, including the rebel Justice and Equality Movement, the Sudan Liberation Army and the Sudan Liberation Movement are fighting the central government in Darfur region since 2003.
