Kenya's bourse gains as large stocks rise

NAIROBI, March 27 (Xinhua) -- At least 11 large stocks at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) went up Monday by between 0.8 percent and 9 percent as the bourse started the week stronger.

The surge lifted up the benchmark NSE 20 Share Index 21 points to end the day at 3,098.16 from 3,077 in the last session, reversing a negative trend.

Similarly, the All share Index (NASI) ended the day at 131.42 from 130.61 in the previous session while the NSE 25 Share Index closed at 3,459.89 from 3,436.48.

Leading telecom Safaricom was the day's top traded stock, moving 13.3 million shares at nearly 0.19 U.S. dollars, a high of 1.2 percent.

In the second position was Equity Bank trading 5.1 million shares at 0.30 dollars, an increase of 0.8 percent, while KenolKobil came in third with 4.2 million shares at 0 l.13 dollars.

Athi River Mining with 1 million shares traded at 0.19 dollars was in the fourth position while Barclays Bank closed the top five lists with 879,700 shares at 0.09 dollars.

Some 26 million shares valued at 5.2 million dollars were traded during the session, down from 27 million shares that were valued at 6.5 million dollars posted last Friday.

The bond market turnover declined to 8 million dollars from 26 million dollars posted the previous session.
