| White Jade Tower |
Lushun is situated on the southern tip of Liaodong
Peninsula and in the western most part of Dalian. It
is rich in natural resources and of great value for
scientific and historical research. There are places
of historical interest such as the sites of the Sino-Japanese
War in 1894 and the Russo-Japanese War in 1904. Lushun
occupies an area of 244.22 square kilometers and is
the largest scenic place in Dalian with 8 scenic areas
and 72 scenic spots.
White Jade Hill (130 meters above sea level) stands
to the north of Lushunkou Bay. On top of the hill, there
erects a white tower originally built after the Russian-Japanese
War by the Japanese to commemorate their dead officers
and soldiers. In 1985, the tower was formally renamed
as "White Jade Hill Tower" serving as a proof
of the Japanese imperialist aggression. There are a
driveway, a cable car and a footpath leading to the
top of the hill where one can have a bird eye¡¯s view
of Lushun.
Martyrs' Mausoleum is located to the east of white
Jade Hill, where 18,300 souls were buried. On November
21,1894 when the Japanese aggressors occupied Lushun,
they killed tens of thousands of civilians and only
36 people survived the four-day slaughtering. The massacre
shocked the world. In memory of the dead , the descendants
built this mausoleum.
Constructed by the Russians, Lushun Railroad Station
was the end of South Manchuria railroad line when Tsarist
Russia invaded Lushun. The terminal building features
a wood structure in Gothic architectural style with
white color and green tiles. It is the best European-style
terminal building reserved along the Northeast railroad
line.
Established in 1929, Lushun Zoo is located in the new
urban section of Lushun with an area of 50,000 square
meters. Since 1949, the zoo has been renovated four
times and raises more than 400 animals in over 70 kinds.
There is a botanical garden in the south of the new
urban section of Lushun, which covers an area of 40,000
square meters. It was first built in 1902. In the garden,
numerous rare trees and plants from Northeast China
and Inner Mongolia have been kept.
Situated at the north suburban part of Lushun, Crest
Mountains are important battle sites of the Russo-Japanese
War. There are fortresses, batteries and remains of
warfare all over the East Crest Mountain and the West
Crest Mountain. As one of the five permanent fortresses
along a semi-circle of 20-kilometers-long defence line,
the North Fortress on the East Crest Mountain was built
by the Tsarist Russians in defence of Lushun. It is
a provincial level unit for preservation of major historical
relics.

| The Mausoleum of Ten Thousand Martyrs |
The site of the former Lushun Prison, which was established
by Tsarist invaders and later expanded by the Japanese
aggressors, covers a ground area of 226,000 square meters.
It was then the largest penitentiary in Northeast China
with 253 cells and each cell has an area of 15 square
meters. It is now used as a memorial place for exhibition
of crimes of imperialist aggression. It is also one
of the major national historical relics.
Tiger Tail scenic spot is located in the south urban
part of Lushun only six kilometers away from downtown.
In history, Tiger Tail was of strategic importance.
During the Russo-Japanese War, it was one of the major
sea battle sites where there are several batteries and
other remains of warfare. This is also a natural breakwater,
where many people come for beach combing, fishing, swimming
and enjoying the view of Port of Lushun.
Golden Hill scenic spot is located in the south beach
of Lushun, 1.5 kilometers away from the downtown. In
this area, there are sites and remains of the Sino-Japanese
War and the Russian-Japanese War and some historical
relics of the Tang Dynasty such as the famous Honglu
Water Well. This place also features a beautiful bathing
beach.
Laotie Mountains lie in the southernmost part of Dalian.
Its highest peak is 466 meters above sea level. The
mountains are precipitous with quiet surroundings of
thick forests. Here is a major rest place for migrating
birds. It is now the national natural reserve area.
In front of the main peak is the promontory rock on
which one can overlook the natural boundary line between
the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. Guo Village in this area
is the remains of New Stone Age in China which dates
back about four thousand years.

Xiaolong Mountains scenes are located in the western
part of Lushun along the coast of Bohai Sea and cover
an area of 3.5 million square meters. They include Snake
Island, Hog Island, Sea Cat Island, Tiger Island, Yangjiatao
Bathing Beach, Yangtouwa Port, etc. Snake Island is
located in the west end of the scenic area and within
the Bohai Bay. There are over ten thousand vipers on
the island that seek all kinds of birds for food. Sea
Cat Island faces Snake Island across the sea. Flocks
of seagulls reside here all year round. The island has
a wonderful sight with rocks and reefs in strange shapes.
Yangtouwa Port is an old haven, which has played an
important role in connecting Liaodong Peninsula and
Shandong Peninsula ever since the Qin and Han Dynasties.
Monkey Stone Hill scenes are located in the western
part of Lushun only two kilometers from downtown. This
place used to be one of the important commanding grounds
and battle sites during the Sino-Japanese War and the
Russo-Japanese War. The Yizi Mount Fort was constructed
by the army of the Qing Dynasty in 1889 to defend against
the invading Japanese troops. 203 highland is 206 meters
above sea level and was named in 1094 by the Japanese
army during the Russo-Japanese War. It was one of the
major battle fields, where the Russian and Japanese
troops fought over occupation of Lushun. The Cemetery
of Soviet Military Martyrs buries the souls of Russian
Red Army soldiers who had died in defence of the common
interests of China and the Soviet Union since 1945.
