ABUJA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Five people, including four female teenage suicide bombers, died in an early morning attack in a village near Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, local police confirmed on Wednesday.
The attackers, who targeted the local Usmanti village, killed a local chief and injured 16 local residents, according to Damian Chukwu, the Borno State police chief.
He said the villagers made effort to stop the attackers who quickly detonated the explosives wrapped around their bodies.
The National Emergency Management Agency said rescue operation, which was immediately conducted at the crime spot, had been completed.
Local security agents had cordoned off the area, with the police anti-bomb squad also rendering it safe.
Terror group Boko Haram, which is blamed for more than 20,000 deaths and displacement of 2.3 million people since 2009, is suspected to be responsible for the early morning attack.
Nigeria has made a considerable gain on the Boko Haram front, with its security forces operating in the restive region dislodging the Boko Haram fighters from the Sambisa Forest, the group's largest training camp in the country, last December.
The security forces are intensifying aerial and ground patrols in the country's northeast, extending their offensive mission around the Green Belt Region near Niger and Chad.
