ABUJA, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- Prison guards shot dead two attackers and wounded another when a group of bandits attempted to free prisoners in Nigeria's northwestern state of Sokoto on Wednesday, local police said.
They had attacked a prison van carrying 18 inmates to court for trial, police said.
The attack was repelled by prison guards, leading to the death of two bandits, police spokesperson Cordelia Nwewe said.
An investigation is on, Nwewe said, adding that none of the 18 inmates were freed by the attackers.
