Security Council condemns terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso

UNITED NATIONS, March 2 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday strongly condemned the terrorist attacks against the army headquarters and the French Embassy in Ouagadougou, capital of Burkina Faso.

In a press statement, the members of the Security Council expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government of Burkina Faso.

They also wished a speedy recovery to those injured.

"The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security," said the statement.

They expressed their solidarity with Burkina Faso in its fight against terrorism and stressed the need to intensify regional and international efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

The members of the Security Council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed, it said.

They reaffirmed the need for all states to combat threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts by all means, it added.

Earlier on Friday, Islamic extremists opened fire on the French Embassy and army headquarters in separate attacks in Ouagadougou, killing at least seven soldiers.
