SAN FRANCISCO, March 6 (Xinhua) -- A hi-tech company in the U.S. western state of California Tuesday announced a breakthrough filtration solution that addresses a worldwide scourge of pollution, such as lead, arsenic and other toxic substances, in global water supply.

Mesofilter Inc., based in Silicon Valley, the home to many of the world's largest high-tech firms, said its latest product, Mesopaper, is a "breakthrough paper filter that removes 99 percent of arsenic, lead, uranium and heavy metals and inactivates bacteria and viruses from water and air without pressure, chemicals or plastic."

It is a remarkable upgrade and highly efficient solution in the water filtration industry, and the self-contained paper can be molded into many shapes, such as pour-through filters, straw filters, and industrial filtration cartridges, with biodegradable features.

The filter paper integrates meso-ceramics with natural cellulose, and its arsenic and lead removal capability has been tested and certified by the National Sanitation Foundation International, an American product testing, inspection and certification organization based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, said the company.

Unlike other filtration processes, Mesopaper does not require pressure, chemicals, electrical potential, plastic or any additional equipment.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, arsenic, lead, and mercury are the three most hazardous threats to human health, and the consumption of these materials often comes from contaminated water.

Mesofilter quoted a World Health Organization report as saying that arsenic poisoning alone affects 200 million people worldwide, and 170 million people are drinking water containing cancer-causing, radioactive elements.

"Everyone deserves access to clean, safe water," said Liangjie Dong, Mesopaper's co-founder and CEO. "Our goal with Mesopaper is to bring clean air and water to anyone, anywhere."
