TRIPOLI, March 8 (Xinhua) -- The UN-sponsored campaign "Peace for Libya" was launched on Thursday in the Libyan capital Tripoli under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

A group of Libyan women organized the event under the auspices of the UN Women's Support and Empowerment Section of the UN Mission, a campaign calling for women to contribute to peace in Libya.

"This day serves as a reminder that women's role in public affairs is no less important than men's, even more, their role is distinguished," said the Head of the Mission Ghassan Salame during the launch of the campaign, which coincides with the International Women's Day.

"Women are more likely to commit to security and less likely to violate it. Libyan women's voice against the terrible proliferation of weapons must be heard, for they are affected the most by conflicts and weapons proliferation," Salame said.

"I came here to ask for your assistance, for I believe that women's role in resolving conflicts and ending suffering is incontestable. Building a nation requires living in harmony not only living in civil peace," Salame added.

Karima Rajab, coordinator of the campaign, stressed women's role in coexistence. "We count on the support of men to achieve participation and equality," She said.

A group of Libyan women gathered in Switzerland in November 2015 for the Libyan Women's Action Plan for Peace Conference, with sponsorship of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UN Women Regional Office of Arab States, and the Women's Empowerment Section at the UNSMIL.

The Conference provided a "safe space for Libyan women who agreed to come together at a very difficult time in Libya in order to discuss their vital role in peace-building in a transparent way," according to the UN Mission.
