WINDHOEK, March 12 (Xinhua)-- French automobile manufacturer, Groupe PSA, announced on Monday plans to start assembling Opel and Peugeot vehicles in the port city of Walvis Bay under a joint venture agreement with the Namibia Development Corporation (NDC).

Europe's second largest car manufacturer said assembly will start in the second half of this year, with an annual targeted volume of 5,000 units by 2020 to meet the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) countries' market demand.

The Opel Grandland X and Peugeot 3008 will be the first outputs from this factory, and other products will follow to meet customer demand.

Executive Vice President for Middle East and Africa Region at Groupe PSA, Jean-Christophe Quemard, said the investment in the southwestern African country is part of the long term strategy of Groupe PSA to increase its sales in Africa and the Middle East, consistent with its target to sell one million vehicles in 2025.

"This new capacity will serve regional markets with products in line with our Opel and Peugeot customer expectation," Quemard said.
