ADDIS ABABA, March 13 (Xinhua) -- A bus fell off a cliff leaving 38 people dead in Ethiopia's northern Amhara regional state, a regional bureau said on Tuesday.
The accident occurred on Sunday in Legambo district, South Wollo zone of Amhara, involving a bus carrying 48 people that was travelling from Mekane Selam city to Dessie city, said a statement from Legambo district government communication affairs office.
Ten other passengers who were injured are receiving treatment in nearby health stations.
Despite Ethiopia having a low car ownership, deadly traffic accidents are common in the country with blames put on bad roads, flawed driving license issuance system and lax enforcement of road safety rules.
Traffic accidents during the Ethiopian Fiscal Year 2016/17 that ended on July 8, 2017 led to the deaths of 4,500 people, according to Ethiopia Federal Transport Authority.
