LAGOS, March 19 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government on Monday started to tain 300 primary school teachers on psycho-social support and peace building skills in the restive northeastern state of Adamawa.

The one-week training reportedly aims to enable the teachers to better support parents and pupils affected by insurgency.

Chairman of the Presidential Committee on North East Initiative (PCNI) Theophilus Danjuma said the training became necessary in view of the disadvantaged position of the sub-region particularly in education and economy.

Danjuma, a former defense minister, said the northeast is lagging behind in all facets of human development and advancement.

"This sad reality of our dear region has been attributed to several factors, prominent among which is mass failure of students who are to transit to higher institutions of learning," he added.

"Another challenge that evolved with Boko Haram insurgency must be tackled to secure the future of our children and the issue of trauma and insecurity of schools," he said.

The chairman listed poor quality of teachers, trauma counseling and security of schools as some of the key things the training is to tackle.

Adamawa State, located in Nigeria's northeast region, has witnessed frequent attacks by Boko Haram since 2009.
