LUANDA, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The Angolan Interior Minister, Angelo Veiga Tavares, on Wednesday urged a greater international cooperation in the fight against transactional crimes to facilitate the recovery of financial assets abroad.

Tavares was speaking at the opening a Consultative Council of his Ministry in Luanda. He called for greater cooperation with the Interpol through existing bilateral and multilateral agreements.

For the Minister, the Angolan National Police and the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) must be more forceful in the fight against violent crimes including unveiling corruption crimes.

In December last year, Angola's president Joao Lourenco appealed nationals to repatriate the funds illegally held overseas or risk prosecution.

Since he took over the presidency last September, Angolan president promised to be fierce in the fight against corruption, saying in his inauguration "No one is so rich and powerful that they cannot be punished and no one is so poor that they cannot be protected."

On Monday 26, Jose Filomeno dos Santos, former Sovereign Wealth Fund CEO and son of long-term ruler Jose Eduardo dos Santos was formally accused of fraud and barred from leaving the country due to a probe in an illegal international transfer of 500 million U.S. dollars, which also involved the ex-Central Bank chief.
