ARUSHA, Tanzania, March 30 (Xinhua) -- At least eight people were killed and 65 injured in a road accident that involved two passenger buses in north-western Tanzania's region of Kagera, police said on Friday.

Augustino Ollomi, Kagera Regional Police Commander said that the accident occurred on Thursday evening at around 6 pm local time in north-western Tanzania's district of Ngara involving two passenger buses, which were carrying Burundian refugees, who were returning to their home country from Tanzania.

Ollomi said that the refugees were travelling to Burundi from Nduta refugee camp in the western region of Kigoma through Kagera Region.

He said five people died on the spot and three others died soon after reaching the nearby hospital in north-western Tanzania's district.

The regional police chief cited speed as one cause of the accident as one bus hit a bicycle cyclist and lost control before the second bus rammed into another bus and overturned.

The Burundian refugees were those who decided to voluntarily leave the refugee camps to their home country, according to Ollomi.

The accident happened barely few days when another accident killed 26 people were killed and 10 injured in a deadly road accident in eastern Tanzania's district of Mkuranga.
