TRIPOLI, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Libya's Higher Commission of Elections announced on Sunday the closure of registration of voters abroad for the upcoming elections.
"The Higher Commission of Elections announces to all citizens living abroad that by March 31, 2017, the registration system for voters abroad has been closed, with 6630 voters registered," the commission said in a statement.
It noted that applications for registration through Libyan embassies abroad had been discontinued.
"With the end of the registration that started on Dec. 6, 2017, the commission would like to congratulate all voters for their patriotic spirit to establish the foundations of stability and progress desired for our country," the commission said.
The commission recently announced that more than 2.4 million voters at home have been registered, which represent 50 percent of eligible voters in the country.
Last November, UN Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame announced that the UN Mission in Libya was seeking to ensure the elections to be held before the end of September 2018.
The elections are part of an action plan proposed by Salame last September to end the Libyan political crisis.
