GABORONE, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Botswana will in May play host to the Rugby Africa (RA) Women Sevens Cup, said the Botswana Rugby Union (BRU) on Wednesday.

It says 10 African countries amongst them rugby powerhouses Kenya and South Africa are expected to compete in the 2-day tournament to be played at the National Stadium in Gaborone, capital of Botswana.

The tournament will take place from 25-26 May 2018.

Participating countries are Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya, Senegal and Uganda.

The tournament will be preceded by the Rugby Africa women General Assembly, which will take place in the week leading up to the tournament.

Botswana Rugby President Dave Gilbert has expressed delight at the prospect of Botswana hosting a significant continental rugby event.

He promised that the host will deliver a good tournament as they have full support of the country sports governing body the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC).

Gilbert, who is also the vice President of Rugby Africa said they will continue to advocate for the development of women rugby in the continent.

The events could not have come at the perfect time for Botswana as the southern African country will also be hosting the 7th International Working Group (IWG) Conference on Women and Sports, still in the month of May.

Botswana has been hosting the IWG office for the past four years and the conference is expected to attract a large audience from around the world to discuss issues of women in sports.
