TRIPOLI, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan eastern-based parliament has accepted the call from the Tripoli-based High Council of State to hold an urgent meeting to end the political division in the country, the Libyan News Agency reported Thursday.

A day earlier, Khalid al-Meshri, the newly-elected head of the High Council of State, called on the eastern-based parliament to arrange an urgent meeting between Libya's two councils to end the political division.

According to the parliament's spokesman Abdullah Belheeg, Agila Saleh, Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, has accepted al-Meshri's call.

"The acceptance of the call aims at reaching consensus that would lead to amendment of the political agreement as approved by the parliament to form a presidency council of a president, two deputies and a prime minister," Belheeg said.

The High Council of State, the highest consultative body in Libya under the UN-sponsored political agreement, appointed on Sunday al-Meshri, who is a leader of the Justice and Building Party, as the new head of the council.

Libya has remained politically divided between eastern and western authorities, despite a UN-backed political agreement signed by the Libyan parties in late 2015.
