JOHANNESBURG, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday expressed pleasure on the country's performance at the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast of Australia.

Team South Africa won 13 gold, 11 silver and 13 bronze medals across a broad range of disciplines in Australia and ended on sixth position on the medals table in a competition that featured some of the world's strongest sporting nations as well as emerging states.

In a statement on Monday, Ramaphosa said sport is important for the people's lifestyle.

"We are immensely proud of our team for this outstanding performance that has placed the spotlight not just on our sporting prowess but also on how our society is creating opportunities for all South Africans to realize their human potential," said President Ramaphosa.

South Africa's performance in the Commonwealth games saw Caster Semenya breaking a 34-year-old record with gold in 1500m at 4:00:71. The record was originally held by South Africa's Zola Budd in 1984 at 4:01.81. Ramaphosa said he will personally congratulate the Team South Africa when he meets them.
