Angolan President to participate in 40th Anniversary of Cassinga Massacre in Namibia

WINDHOEK, April 18 (Xinhua) -- The President of Angola, Joao Lourenco will pay a State Visit to Namibia from May 3 to 5 and participate in the 40th Anniversary of the Cassinga Massacre commemoration, on invitation of the country's President Hage Geingob.

The southern African country on May 4 will commemorate the Cassinga Massacre in which the then South African Apartheid regime attacked the Cassinga Refugee Camp, and killed thousands of Namibian civilians and hundreds of Angolans on May. 4, 1978.

The Ministry of International Relations on Wednesday in a statement said during the commemoration, the President of Angola will lay a Wreath at Heroes Acre and participate as Guest of Honor at the event.

"As we pay tribute to these heroes and heroines, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice that has brought about our freedom and independence, Namibia has decided to commemorate this Anniversary at the National level at Heroes Acre, on May. 4," added Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International relations, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.

Meanwhile, the International Relations Ministry has also invited all Cassinga survivors and others to attend the national event to be held in the capital city, Windhoek to pay tribute to the heroes and heroines who perished in Cassinga.
