LAGOS, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian Senator Dino Melaye has been arrested by police after he was recently declared wanted for alleged arms supply to murder suspects.

The senator was arrested Monday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport when he was stopped from travelling to Morocco by Nigeria Immigration Service operatives.

The police have been on the trail of Melaye for weeks after he was declared wanted for alleged possession of illegal firearms. A case was filed against him before the Federal High Court in Lokoja, central north Kogi State capital.

Melaye was declared wanted alongside Mohammed Audu, son of the late former governor of the state, Abubakar Audu.

After he was stopped from travelling to Morroco by the immigration personnel, the police laid seige to his residence in Abuja, the nation's capital.

A police spokesperson Monday night said that their siege to Melaye's residence was necessitated by his involvement in a case of unlawful possession of prohibited firearms.

Melaye's case on his alleged involvement in illegal procurement of firearms is scheduled to resume at the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State on May 10.

Melaye who represents Kogi West senatorial district in the National Assembly has denied the allegation which he describes as politically motivated.
