ABUJA, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian troops in the northeastern state of Borno have rescued 1,000 more people held hostage by terror group Boko Haram, the army said on Monday.
Army spokesman Texas Chukwu did not specifically disclose when the hostages were rescued but told reporters mainly women, children and young men were freed during various operations in villages in the northern state.
Chukwu said most of the victims were used as Boko Haram fighters.
The rescue operations were carried out in collaboration with the multinational joint force of Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, he said.
Early last month, troops in Borno had rescued 149 Boko Haram hostages in a similar operation.
Nigeria has made considerable gains against the terror group, dislodging its fighters from the Sambisa Forest.
Boko Haram has been blamed for the death of more than 20,000 people and displacement of 2.3 million others in Nigeria since 2009.
