ABUJA, May 14 (Xinhua) -- An airman has been confirmed killed following an attack by gunmen on a Nigerian Air Force helipad in the southern city of Yenagoa, the air force said on Monday.
The attack on Sunday, at Igbodene area of Yenagoa, the capital of oil-rich Bayelsa State, was repelled by security operatives at the guard post, according to Olatokunbo Adesanya, the air force's spokesman.
Adesanya said an investigation has been launched to "unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident."
For many years, militants in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria have been battling to control the larger share of the resources.
The militants usually have confrontations with the armed forces deployed to quell the sporadic attacks by gunmen.
