ADDIS ABABA, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopia National Metrology Agency (NMA) warned on Friday several regions in the country are at risk of floods caused by heavy rains.

NMA said the cloud cover in the next 10 days will grow thicker, hastening the likelihood of increased rainfall, reported state media Ethiopia News Agency.

NMA said Ethiopia's capital city Addis Ababa as well as parts of Oromia, Ethiopia Somali, Southern, Gambella and Benishangul-Gumuz regional states could be subjected to heavy rains and flooding.

NMA also urged farmers to undertake the necessary measures to guard against flash floods that can be possibly caused by heavy rains.

About 80 percent of Ethiopia's estimated 100 million population depends on rain fed agriculture for their livelihood.

"Farming and pastoralist communities around Awash, Akobo, Baro, Genale Dawa and Wabishebelle river basins could also be subjected to heavy downpours in the next 10 days," warned NMA.
