TRIPOLI, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed government on Friday condemned a car bombing explosion in the eastern city of Benghazi late Thursday, which killed six and injured more than 20 others.
"The Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord condemns in the strongest terms the cowardly bombing that occurred on Thursday night in Jamal Abdannaser street of Benghazi," the government said in a statement.
Such attack will "only make Libyans more determined to fight terrorism," it added.
The eastern-based parliament House of Representatives also condemned the bombing, calling on all security agencies to "perform their patriotic duty to pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice."
Meanwhile, the UN Mission in Libya expressed condemnation too.
"There is no justification for such attacks ... those who have organized and enabled this attack must be brought to justice," it said.
Benghazi, Libya's second largest city, has frequently been targeted by car bombs and suicide attacks.
In response to the deteriorating security situation, the city set up a joint security chamber of army and police officers.
Last year, the eastern-based army led by Gen. Khalifa Haftar managed to take over Benghazi after more than three years of fighting against terrorist groups in the city.
