THE HAGUE, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Since the beginning of the measurements in 1901, a night in May has never been so warm in the Netherlands than the past Saturday night, with mercury staying high at almost all meteorological measuring points in the west, middle and south, remarked Weerplaza, a popular Dutch weather forecasts website drawn up by professional meteorologists.

It was the least cold in Vlissingen, a harbor city in the southwest, with 19.2 Celsius degrees so far. In De Bilt, a city in the center of the country, the temperature dropped to no lower than 18.3 Celsius degrees, previous record being 16.9 Celsius degrees six years ago.

It is officially a record only if the temperature in De Bilt on Sunday night also remains above 16.9 Celsius degrees. The weather agency assumes that will happen. Temperatures up to 30 Celsius degrees are expected during the day.

Earlier this month, meteorologists said this May is on course to break records as the warmest in history, with the average temperature in De Bilt hitting around 16.5 Celsius degrees, the number of warm days (20 Celsius degrees or higher) beating the previous high of 20.

One record that won't be broken is the sunshine level as hours of clear daylight this month might be around 300, lower than the record of 329.
