LAMU, Kenya, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan authorities have set up extra security camps in marked areas believed to be al-Shabab hotspots in coastal Kenya's Lamu county to flush out terrorists in the tourism resort region.

Lamu County Police Commander Muchangi Kioi said Wednesday the exercise has focused much on the Lamu-Garsen main road which the militants have been using to stage attacks on public serve vehicles.

Kioi said the move is meant to weed out the militant attacks that have previously occurred on the road.

"We have identified and marked all hotspots for terrorists on the roads here. We have also gone ahead to establish police camps in the identified areas. I can assure you that enough security barricades have been set up in all the terror hotspot areas. Travelers and pedestrians should rest assured that their security is guaranteed. The hotspots are well managed," Kioi told Xinhua in Lamu.

The increased security follows a recent string of attacks where al-Shabab militants would waylay and launch attacks on security and transport buses on Lamu's major road, Lamu-Garsen, that left hordes of security officers and civilians dead in the past three years.

Kioi said a considerable number of troops and security officers have also been deployed to reinforce patrols in the region in order to avert any further attacks from the militants.

Kioi has however assured all road travelers in the region of adequate security.

Drivers and other motorists using the road have been asked to stick to police secured convoys for their own safety.

Owing to the threat of terror attacks on the road, travelers are required to travel in convoys under police escort.

The East African nation has warned that attacks as threatened by the Somalia-based terrorist group could affect the country's risk profile limiting the number of new investments being made especially by foreign investors.
