KAMPALA, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan authorities are in talks with Uganda to release eight fishermen who were arrested on Lake Victoria over illegal entry into the country.

Patrick Onyango, Uganda's deputy police spokesperson told Xinhua on Tuesday that the Kenyan fishermen were arrested by the Uganda Revenue Authority law enforcement officers while fishing illegally in Ugandan waters.

"They were detained in one of our police posts on the island and later brought to Namayingo. Taken to court and remanded," said Onyango.

"But there are negotiations between the RDC (Resident District Commissioner) and their equivalent the other side (Kenya) to have them released," he said.

Kenya and Uganda have had several conflicts in the past over fishing activities on Lake Victoria, especially on the disputed Migingo Island. The two countries share the Lake.
