Uganda military questions former police chief

KAMPALA, June 14 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan military on Thursday said it is questioning the country's former police chief on a matter that can not be disclosed at the moment.

Brig. Richard Karemire, the military spokesperson in a statement issued here said that Gen. Kale Kayihura, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) is being held at Makindye Military Barracks in the capital, Kampala.

"The General was indeed flown to Kampala from his farm in Kashagama - Lyantonde district and is being questioned on a matter the details of which cannot at this point be divulged," said Karemire.

"He is currently at Makindye Military Barracks and accessible by his immediate family as well as his lawyers," he said.

Karemire said the public will be informed about any other developments regarding the matter.

The state-owned daily New Vision reported on Thursday that the military arrested Kayihura and his close associates for alleged involvement in the assassination of former Assistant IGP, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, who doubled as director of human resource development and police spokesperson in March 2017.

Kayihura's arrested associates include Jonathan Baroza, his former personal assistant; Herbert Muhangi, the former commander of police flying squad; Ndahura Amooti, former head of crime intelligence and Richard Ndabwoine, former cyber intelligence chief.

Kaweesi was shot dead by unknown gunmen, together with his bodyguard and driver in Kulambiro, a suburb of the capital Kampala.
