NAKURU, Kenya, June 20 (Xinhua) -- At least seven mourners were killed and more than 10 others injured in a grisly road accident on Tuesday night in Nakuru County, the police confirmed on Wednesday.

Nakuru County police commander Hassan Barua said the deceased were headed to Nakuru from a burial ceremony of their kin when the accident occurred.

"Two people died on the spot while five others died on arrival in hospital. Initial investigations revealed that a tyre burst caused the vehicle to roll several times," said Barua of the incident which occurred along Lake Elementaita-Nakuru road.

He said the minibus (matatu) had 16 passengers and was traveling to Nakuru when the accident occurred. He said those injured have been rushed to local hospital.

Road accidents still continue to occur despite stringiest traffic rules which were introduced by the government to help curb road carnage.

An estimated 3,000 Kenyans die in road accidents annually despite concerted efforts by the state and the private sector to promote safety on the highways, according to the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA).
