Armed gang kills two in southern Rwanda

KIGALI, June 20 (Xinhua) -- An armed gang on Tuesday night shot five people and killed two of them in a rural village in southern Rwanda, the Rwandan police said on Wednesday.

The attack took place shortly before midnight in Nyabimata Cell, Nyabimata Sector in Nyaruguru district, Southern Province, the police said in a statement.

"The gang shot five people, killing two. Those injured in the attack, including the executive secretary of Nyabimata Sector, were rushed to Munini hospital where they are receiving medical care," the statement said.

The assailants also set fire to a car belonging to the executive secretary and unsuccessfully tried to break into Nyabimata Savings and Credit Cooperative, it said.

The group also attacked a trading center in Nyabimata Sector, where they looted mainly foodstuff.

The assailants had emerged from Nyungwe forest which borders Burundi, and fled in the same direction after the attack, said the police.

The police said that security officials responded immediately and are currently in pursuit of the attackers, adding that local leaders and security authorities convened a meeting with affected residents to restore calm and reassure them of their security.
