ACCRA, June 20 (Xinhua) -- World football governing body, FIFA, will hold a meeting with government officials in Accra later this week to discuss the future of football in Ghana after the recent documentary on bribery and corruption, a senior official said on Wednesday.
The two sides were originally scheduled to meet at FIFA's head office in Zurich, Switzerland, but the association has decided to send a delegation to Accra to hold the discussions.
According to Elvis Adjei-Baah, spokesperson of the Sports Ministry, the meeting is at the behest of the Ghanaian government after it took steps to restructure the sport in Ghana, following allegations of corruption as depicted in the documentary on football administration in Ghana by award-winning journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
"FIFA initially agreed with the government of Ghana to meet either in Zurich, Russia or Accra to discuss the current situation. But now, it has emerged that the meeting will be held in Accra on Friday, June 22," Adjei-Baah said.
Following the undercover report, which captured several FA officials and referees taking bribes to influence outcomes of matches or player selection, the government has dissolved the FA and suspended all football activities after the expose was first screened publicly in Accra on June 6, 2018.
Consequently, a five-member interim committee has been set up to manage football in the West African country until the "cleansing" of the FA is completed.
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, and two members of the FA are expected to meet the officers from FIFA.
