ACCRA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 10 people have been killed following Monday's torrential rains in some parts of Ghana, the country's relief agency confirmed on Thursday.
Abu Ramadan, deputy director-general of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), said the deaths were recorded in three regions of the country.
In Accra, the national capital, a medical doctor was swept away by the floods. His body was later recovered by a search group on Wednesday.
In the Volta Region, a grandmother and her two grandchildren were electrocuted in the floods.
Ghana's coastal and middle belts have experienced continuous rains since early last month. Monday's downpour caused severe flooding, destroying several properties and displacing dozens of residents, especially in Accra.
According to experts, Accra, which is in a low-lying zone, experiences flooding annually mainly due to the indiscriminate construction of houses, especially on watercourses, the poor drainage system and bad waste management.
Meanwhile, NADMO said it is seeking legal backing to demolish structures built on waterways to avert future flooding.
