BRUSSELS, July 2 (Xinhua) -- A car found here Saturday morning in the Woluwe-Saint-Pierre district of Brussels equipped with explosives and a detonator was "a clear attempt at a terrorist attack", the Belgian federal prosecutor confirmed on Monday.

On the basis of new information from the investigation, the federal prosecutor said the incident was a planned terrorist attack scheduled for June 30 in France.

The two suspects -- a Belgian couple of Iranian origin residing in Wilrijk -- were placed under house arrest. The 38-year-old man and the 33-year-old woman have been charged with preparing and attempting to carry out a terrorist assassination, said the federal prosecutor's office on Monday.

Both are suspected of planning a terrorist bomb attack in the area of Villepinte in France, with the specific aim of striking members present at a conference organized by the People's Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), reported the Belgian newspaper La Libre.

The People's Mujahedin of Iran is an Islamic organization that advocates the overthrow of Iran's government. It is listed as terrorist group by both the European Union and the United States.

Their car was intercepted Saturday in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, a residential area of Brussels. The de-mining service found over 500 grams of explosive TATP and a firing device in the vehicle, another newspaper Le Soir reported.

An alleged accomplice was arrested in France where two other people were brought in for questioning by the police before being released.

At this stage of the investigation, no direct threat against Belgium has been found, the Belgian prosecutor said.
