GENEVA, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Geneva Airport is testing new scanners that can check hand luggage without passengers having to remove liquids or computers, what they claim is a world first, Swiss media reported Monday.
The airport has been leading the world with the use of new luggage scanners since July 1, reported World Radio Switzerland.
The machines produce a 3D image of the bags and their contents, meaning that liquids and laptops do not need to be removed at security.
The scanners are reportedly faster than existing systems, checking a maximum of 225 passengers for each machine, compared with 100 to 120 passengers for more traditional scanners.
The image of a bag can be manipulated on the screen and turned in all directions to better isolate details. The software also colors the materials according to their composition and provides the size and weight of each element.
The changes come as the airport tries to adapt to the growing number of passengers it is expected to see pass through its doors. Traveller numbers are expected to rise from 17.3 million in 2017 to 25 million in 2030, said Swiss national broadcaster RTS.
