KHARTOUM, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's Ministry of Minerals announced on Tuesday that the country's gold production for the first half of current year reached 63.3 tons.

"The gold revenues during the first half of current year surpassed the projected target by 101 percent," said Mohamed Ahmed Ali, Sudan's Minerals Minister in a report.

He added that the mining sector has big opportunities upon which the state greatly depends to overcome the current economic crisis.

He said the sector has contributed 6 percent of the Gross Domestic Product with a growth rate of 14 percent.

In 2017, Sudan produced over 100 tons of gold worth around 400 million U.S. dollars.

Sudan is seeking to make gold a major source of foreign currency after losing three quarters of its oil revenues due to the separation of South Sudan in 2011.

In January this year, Sudan government announced incentives to encourage the mining companies to increase their production.
