DAR ES SALAAM, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The government of Tanzania is reviewing the Non-Governmental Organizations Act of 2001 with a view to aligning it with key changes to facilitate close monitoring of the organizations' operations, a senior official said on Wednesday.
The revision of the law governing NGOs will also provide for strict penalties to NGOs that will misbehave, including deregistration, said Ismael Suleiman, the Secretary General of the National Council of NGOs.
The news on the review of the law came barely a few days after President John Magufuli directed new Home Affairs Minister Kangi Lugola to take a closer look at some NGOs which he said were operating against the law.
"There are a lot of issues that must be addressed because the law that we have has been here for more than 17 years," said Suleiman.
Currently, Tanzania has 17,000 registered NGOs, according to government statistics.
