CAIRO, July 14 (Xinhua) -- The Egyptian prosecution ordered on Saturday a four-day detention of six railway employees pending investigation into train derailment that left at least 58 wounded in Giza province near the capital Cairo.

The train driver, his assistant, two electric technicians, a stationmaster and a control tower operator are currently under probe over Friday's derailment and overturn of three carriages of a train heading from Cairo to Upper Egypt's Qena province.

The accident took place in Giza's Badrasheen district south of Cairo.

Prosecutor General Nabil Sadek assigned a team of experts from the Armed Forces Engineering Authority to investigate into the accident.

Egypt has witnessed a number of deadly train accidents over the past few years, in which hundreds were killed and injured.

The deadliest train accident in Egypt took place in Giza's district of Ayyat in 2002, which killed 350 passengers when a fire broke out in a train coming from Upper Egypt, forcing many passengers to jump for their lives.

Egyptian Transport Minister Hesham Arafat announced in April a project to renovate the country's old railway system by 2022, with a total cost of 55 billion Egyptian pounds (about 3.1 billion U.S. dollars).

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said earlier this year that the country needed from 200 to 250 billion pounds for a comprehensive upgrade of the railway network, noting that the amount was not available due to difficult economic conditions.
